Biocides

Biocides are additives that kill bacteria. Bactericides are commonly used in water mud containing natural starches and gums that are especially vulnerable to bacterial attack. Bactericide choices are limited and care must be taken to find those that are effective yet approved by governments and by company policy. Bactericides, also called biocides, can be used to control sulfate-reducing bacteria, slime-forming bacteria, iron-oxidizing bacteria and bacteria that attacks polymers. In polymers, the degradation of the fluid is controlled, thus avoiding the formation of a large biomass, which could plug the formation and reduce permeability.

Corrosion Inhibitor and Scavengers

Corrosion inhibitors generally are mixed with the treatment fluid and are formulated to be effective in protecting the metal components the fluid is likely to contact. Hamilton chemical additives are used in acid treatments to protect iron and steel components in the wellbore and treating equipment from the corrosive treating fluid. This protection must remain effective under the anticipated pressure and temperature environment for the duration of the treatment.

Defloculants, Thinners and Filtration Control Additives

These are thinning agents to reduce viscosity or to prevent flocculation. Most deflocculants have low-molecular weight that neutralize positive charges on clay edges during drilling. These include polyphosphates, lignosulfonates, quebracho and various water-soluble synthetic polymers. At Hamilton, we have the following products for mud control solutions.

Defoamers

Hamilton Defoamers include defoamers for brine, defoamers for silicone and defoamers for water based mud. Defoamers are mud additives used to lower interfacial tension so that trapped gas will readily escape from mud. Mechanical degassing equipment is commonly used along with the defoamer. Octyl alcohol, aluminum stearate, various glycols, silicones and sulfonated hydrocarbons are also used as defoamers.

Lost Circulation Materials

Hamilton loss circulation materials when introduced into the mud, reduces and eventually prevents the flow of drilling fluid into a weak, fractured or vugular formation. These materials are generally fibrous or plate-like in nature. In addition, popular lost circulation materials are low-cost waste products from the food processing or chemical manufacturing industries. Examples of lost circulation material include ground peanut shells, mica, cellophane, walnut shells, calcium carbonate, plant fibers, cottonseed hulls, ground rubber, and polymeric material.

Lubricants

Lubricants are mud additives for lowering rotary friction and axial friction in the wellbore and to lubricate bit bearings if not sealed. Hamilton lubricants may be solids, such as plastic beads, glass beads, nut hulls and graphite, or liquids, such as oils, synthetic fluids, glycols, modified vegetable oils, fatty-acid soaps and surfactants.

Pipe Freeing and Spotting Additives

Oil-base mud is the traditional stuck-pipe spotting fluid. The speed used in mixing and placing the spot is of primary importance to successfully freeing pipes. Due to Hamilton’s policy on safety and concern about mud disposal, spots used offshore are either synthetic-based emulsions or benign water-base formulations. Each type is supplied as prepackaged concentrate designed for rapid access and mixing at the rig. A spot frees pipe by covering the stuck region. It presumably breaks up the filter cake, allowing the spot to migrate into cracks in the cake and between the pipe and the cake, reducing the stuck area and allowing the pipe to be pulled free.

Shale Control Additives

A fine grained, fissle, detrital sedimentary rock formed by consolidation of clay and silt sized particles into thin, relatively impermeable layers. It is the most abundant sedimentary rock. Shale can include relatively large amounts of organic material compared with other rock types and thus has the potential to become a rich hydrocarbon source rock, even though a typical shale contains just 1% organic matter. Its typical fine grained size and lack of permeability, a consequence of the alignment of its platy or flaky grains, allow shale to form a good cap rock for hydrocarbon traps. Although maximum shale inhibition is realized with oil mud, their use in some wells may not be considered practical because of other factors. These factors must be carefully evaluated in relation to the severity of the shale instability problem. Oil mud can: * Reduce the penetration rate in some formations * Limit the logging program * Affect cuttings analysis * Require special preparation and maintenance programs * Be environmentally unacceptable

Surfactants and Detergents

Surfactants act as surface active agents. This type of surfactant behavior, whether acting as an emulsifier or dispersant or otherwise, depends on the structural groups on the molecule (or mixture of molecules). For Hamilton surfactants, the Hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) number helps define the function that a molecular group will perform.

Viscosifiers

Our viscosifiers are designed to maintain viscosity and they vary with the type of fluid. Bentonite is a viableand inexpensive choice for use in fresh water fluids. Also, several polymers like CMC, HEC, Xanthum Gum are available for use in clear brines as well as fresh water. But HEC and other starch derivatives are frequently chosen because they are partially or completely acid soluble.

Weighting Agents

HAMILTON weighting agents are high – in specific gravity and are finely divided solid materials used to increase the density of a drilling mud. Barite, a dense mineral is the most common. Hematite which is a more dense material with a specific gravity of 5.05g/cm3, and API/150 Specification. Calcium carbonate, specific gravity 2.7 to 2.8 used more for its acid solubility than for density is also a dense mineral known to cause problems by dissolving in the mud at high pH so this can be made adjustable to fit the drilling operations that occur when the various minerals are dissolved into the mud. Ilmenite, specific gravity is also one of our weighting agents.
